Post-Menopausal Bleeding and Hajj: Can You Perform All the Rituals?

Post-Menopausal Bleeding and Hajj: Can You Perform All the Rituals?

Question
Assalamu alaikum
I am 54 years old female. Had menopause for one year. Later started getting red discharge instead of white from past almost 2 year. Did so many treatments but still no relief. Alhamdulillah got selected for this year Hajj. Am I eligible to perform all the rituals in Hajj?

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

After menopause, any bleeding that occurs is generally not considered menstruation (hayd) in the Sharia.

Allah says:

“And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women…”
Surat al Talaq 65:4

This indicates that once a woman has reached menopause, the ruling of hayd no longer applies in the usual sense.

The Prophet ﷺ also said regarding abnormal bleeding:

“It is only a vein (bleeding), not menstruation.”
Sahih al Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars explain:

  • Menopause is when a woman no longer experiences regular menstruation
  • Any bleeding after confirmed menopause is typically classified as istihada (irregular bleeding)

The ruling of istihada is:

  • It does not prevent الصلاة
  • It does not prevent fasting
  • It does not prevent entering the masjid or performing rituals

A woman in istihada is treated as ritually pure, with certain precautions for wudu.

3. Application to the Question

In your situation:

  • You had menopause for one year, which is a strong indication that your cycle has ended
  • The ongoing red discharge afterward is most likely istihada, not hayd

Therefore:

  • You are eligible to perform all Hajj rituals, including:
    • Ihram
    • Tawaf
    • Sa‘i
    • Standing in Arafah
    • All other rites

However, you should:

  • Treat yourself as a woman with istihada
  • For each prayer:
    • Clean the area as best as possible
    • Use protection (pad, etc.)
    • Perform wudu after the prayer time begins

5. Relevant Usul Principle

اليقين لا يزول بالشك
Certainty is not removed by doubt

You are certain that you have reached menopause. This certainty is not removed by later irregular bleeding. Therefore, the default ruling is that this bleeding is not hayd, but istihada.

Final Ruling

Your bleeding after menopause is treated as istihada, not menstruation. Therefore, you are fully eligible to perform all the rituals of Hajj, including tawaf. You should proceed normally while following the rulings of istihada for wudu and cleanliness.

And Allah knows best.
