Zakah on Land

ZAKAH ON LAND

Q: I own land intended for business but haven’t sold it in years. Do I owe zakah?
A: Yes, you do:

  • Calculate its zakah value yearly.
  • If you cannot pay due to lack of liquid cash, track each year’s zakah.
  • When you sell the land, pay zakah retroactively for all previous years.

This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, though the Maliki school holds a different view.

Q: What if the land is for business and I can’t afford yearly zakah due to no income from it?
A: You still calculate zakah yearly and defer payment until the land is sold.
