Paying Sadaqah via Interest-Free Installments After Donation: Is It Permissible?
Question
Asslamu Alykum
Is it permissible to pay sadaqah in installments? And if so, what is the maximum number of installments?
Context: I payed sadaqah using a credit card, and now the card company is offering me to make payments in installments instead of all at once. Without fees or interest. I can split the payment into installments of 6 months, 12 months, or 24 months. Again it’s a special offer without fees or interest.
The payment has already gone to the charity organization, and this offer just presented itself after, through the credit card company.
I am a trader, so liquidity is important for my business, but I had full intention to pay the card fully as soon as it was due, but now this offer came to me and I am considering taking advantage of it.
Jazakum Allah Khair
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
1. The Shari Context
Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity, and Islam encourages giving according to one’s ability, whether immediately or over time.
Allah says:
“So fear Allah as much as you are able.”
Surat al Taghabun 64:16
And He says:
“Those who spend in ease and in hardship…”
Surat Aal Imran 3:134
At the same time, financial dealings must remain free of riba (interest) and prohibited conditions.
2. Scholarly Discussion
The scholars allow giving sadaqah in installments, since it is not an obligation tied to a fixed immediate payment like certain financial duties. There is no specific limit in the Sharia on the number of installments, as long as the arrangement is clear and free of prohibited elements.
Regarding using a credit card, the ruling depends on whether the arrangement involves interest. If a person uses a credit card and pays it off without incurring any interest, many scholars allow this.
As for installment plans, if they are genuinely:
- Free of interest (riba)
- Free of hidden fees or penalties
- Clearly defined and agreed upon
then they fall under permissible financial arrangements.
3. Application to the Question
In your situation:
- The sadaqah has already been fully delivered to the charity
- What remains is a debt between you and the credit card company
- The company is offering to restructure that debt into interest-free installments
This is no longer about sadaqah itself, but about managing a debt in a permissible way.
Therefore:
- It is permissible to accept the installment plan if it is truly free of interest and penalties
- There is no specific maximum number of installments in Sharia
- You may choose what best suits your financial situation, especially considering your need for liquidity as a trader
However, you should be cautious:
- Ensure there are no hidden fees or deferred interest clauses
- Avoid any risk of falling into interest if payments are missed
4. Relevant Usul Principle
الأصل في المعاملات الإباحة
The default ruling in financial transactions is permissibility
This principle means that financial arrangements are permissible unless they clearly involve something prohibited such as riba. Since this installment plan is described as interest-free and free of fees, it remains within the scope of permissible transactions.
Final Ruling
It is permissible to pay your credit card balance in interest-free installments, and there is no fixed limit on the number of installments. Since the sadaqah has already been given, this is simply a matter of managing your debt. As long as the arrangement remains free of interest and hidden conditions, you may take advantage of it.
And Allah knows best.
