Is It Permissible to Make Dua Asking Allah for a Long Life?

Question

Is it wrong to make dua for a long life?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Life itself is a blessing from Allah, and the value of a long life in Islam is connected to how it is used in obedience and good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ clarified that the best people are those whose lives are longer and whose deeds are better.

He said:

“The best of people are those who live long and whose deeds are good.”
Sunan al Tirmidhi

This hadith shows that a long life is not discouraged in Islam. Rather, it becomes praiseworthy when it is accompanied by righteousness and continued worship.

At the same time, the Sharia discourages wishing for death simply due to hardship or difficulty in life. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“None of you should wish for death because of a calamity that has afflicted him.”
Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

This demonstrates that a believer is encouraged to value life as an opportunity to continue earning reward.

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars explained that asking Allah for a long life is permissible when the intention is to increase in good deeds and obedience.

Many scholars mention that the Companions used to ask Allah for barakah in life and time, because a longer life allows more acts of worship, repentance, charity, and service to others.

However, they also cautioned that asking for long life without concern for righteousness is not meaningful in itself. The true objective is a life filled with obedience.

For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ taught a balanced supplication that connects life with goodness.

3. Application to the Question

If a person says: “O Allah grant me a long life so I may worship You, do good deeds, and serve others,” this is a good and praiseworthy dua.

If someone simply asks for long life without mentioning good deeds, the dua is still permissible, but it is better to connect it to righteousness and benefit.

The Prophet ﷺ taught a dua that reflects this balance:

“O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me.”
Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

This supplication entrusts the ultimate wisdom to Allah, while recognizing that the value of life lies in goodness.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

الأمور بمقاصدها
Actions are judged by their intentions
In usul al fiqh, the moral and legal value of an action is connected to its intention. Asking for long life becomes praiseworthy when the intention is to increase in obedience and beneficial deeds.

Final Ruling

It is permissible to make dua asking Allah for a long life, and it is recommended to connect that request to righteousness and good deeds. A believer should ask Allah to grant a life that is filled with obedience and to take their soul when death is better for them.

And Allah knows best.
