Following the Imam When You Cannot Complete Recitation or Tashahud: Is the Prayer Still Valid?
Question
Salaam alaikum sheikh. I have a couple of questions below:
– I’m praying behind an imam and he’s not a fast imam in his recitation so in some rakahs, I’m able to complete my Fatiha recitation and tasbeeh. But in some other rakahs, I’m unable to complete my Fatiha or final tashahud. Is my prayer valid if I continue following the imam although I didn’t complete my recitation or final tashahud or do I pray again after the imam ends the prayer?
– Sheikh Albani said that sending the complete salawat on the prophet in the first tashahud is mandatory. However, sheikh uthaymeen or ibn taymiyya said only the tashahud is required. Can you please clarify? Is my prayer valid if I choose to only say the first tashahud without sending salawat on the prophet.
– Some credible sheikhs also said that only saying “Allahumma salli ala Muhammad” suffices in the FINAL tashahud which is a pillar of the prayer. Is there evidence for this and is this correct?
– I started the prayers with the imam, and during the first tashahud, I was slow to complete it so I stood up a bit later than the imam and the rest of the congregation. Then the imam went for ruku but I was still catching up with my Fatiha recitation and before completing Fatiha, the imam had risen from the ruku. How do I make this up? Do I simply pray another rakah after taslim or do I break my prayer and pray the entire Salah again?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
1. The Shari Context
Congregational prayer in Islam is built upon following the imam and maintaining unity within the prayer. The imam leads the prayer so that the congregation does not act independently from him.
The Prophet said:
“The imam is only appointed to be followed. So when he says takbir, say takbir; when he bows, then bow; and when he rises, then rise.”
Sahih al Bukhari, Sahih Muslim
Because of this, the general rule is that the follower does not delay significantly behind the imam in order to complete personal recitations. Rather, the worshipper moves with the imam even if some recitation is not completed.
2. Scholarly Discussion
The scholars of the four madhahib discuss several issues related to recitation behind the imam and the tashahud.
Regarding reciting al Fatiha behind the imam, the Hanafi school holds that the follower does not recite it in audible prayers and instead listens to the imam. The Maliki, Shafii, and Hanbali schools generally require reciting al Fatiha, but they also state that if the imam moves to the next pillar before the follower finishes, the follower must follow the imam and their prayer remains valid.
Regarding the first tashahud, the majority of scholars consider it obligatory or required but not a pillar, meaning that if it is shortened or missed due to following the imam, the prayer remains valid.
As for sending salawat upon the Prophet in the final tashahud, the scholars differ. The Shafii and Hanbali schools treat it as an essential component of the final sitting, while the Hanafi and Maliki schools consider the core requirement to be the tashahud itself, with the salawat being strongly emphasized. Because of this, the prayer is generally considered valid if the tashahud itself is completed, even if the wording of salawat is shortened.
3. Application to the Question
In your situation, several principles apply.
First, if the imam moves to the next position before you complete al Fatiha, you should follow the imam immediately. Your prayer remains valid and you do not repeat the prayer.
Second, if the imam rises before you complete the first tashahud, you should also rise with the imam. The first tashahud is not a pillar that invalidates the prayer if shortened in this situation.
Third, regarding sending salawat in the first tashahud, it is not required according to the majority of scholars. Therefore your prayer remains valid if you only recite the tashahud.
Fourth, in the final tashahud, the prayer upon the Prophet should ideally be recited in the complete form reported in the Sunnah. However, many scholars state that even a shortened form such as Allahumma salli ala Muhammad fulfills the minimum requirement when necessary.
Finally, in the situation you described where you were still reciting al Fatiha while the imam completed ruku and stood up again, that rakah would not count for you because you did not catch the ruku with the imam. In this case, you simply add one rakah after the imam finishes the prayer to complete your salah. You do not break the prayer or repeat the entire prayer.
4. Relevant Usul Principle
المشقة تجلب التيسير
Hardship brings about facilitation
This principle means that when difficulty arises in fulfilling a ruling in its full form, the Sharia allows reasonable facilitation within the limits of the law. In congregational prayer, it is often difficult for every follower to complete all recitations while staying synchronized with the imam. For this reason, the Sharia prioritizes following the imam and allows incomplete recitation when necessary.
Final Ruling
If the imam moves before you complete al Fatiha or the first tashahud, you should follow the imam and your prayer remains valid. Sending salawat in the first tashahud is not obligatory, and the prayer remains valid without it. In the final tashahud, a shortened salawat may suffice if necessary. If you missed catching the imam in ruku, that rakah does not count for you and you simply complete one additional rakah after the imam finishes the prayer.
And Allah knows best.
