Question
Is it permissible to have rhinoplasty if it will make the nose more beautiful, provided there was a medical issue that required surgery in the first place?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
Principle: Limiting the Surgery to the Actual Need
Corrective surgery in Islam is permissible when there is genuine harm or medical necessity, such as a broken nose, deformity, or breathing problem. However, the procedure must be restricted to what is necessary to remove that harm. Going beyond this for the sake of beautification alone is not allowed.
Example and Clarification
- If someone requires surgery for an issue such as adenoids or a blockage inside the nose, this does not justify reshaping the entire nose for beauty. Removing adenoids is a functional surgery, not one that requires altering the shape of the nose.
- Similarly, if only one side of the nose is collapsed or obstructed and requires surgical correction, then only that side may be fixed. The patient cannot use this as an excuse to redesign or beautify the whole nose.
Legal Maxim
“What is permitted due to necessity is restricted to its extent.” (الضرورة تقدر بقدرها)
This means one may correct what is damaged, but may not exceed that limit to pursue extra beautification.
Final Ruling
- If a person undergoes nasal surgery due to injury, deformity, or a medical problem, it is permissible to repair only what is needed.
- If the repair unintentionally results in a more beautiful appearance, this is excused.
And Allah knows best.
