Is it permissible to combine prayers due to school, work, or travel within a city?

Question :

Is it permissible to combine prayers due to school, work, or travel within a city?

Answer:

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Indeed, the prayer is prescribed for the believers at fixed times” (Qur’an 4:103). Therefore, one must do everything within their ability to perform the prayers at their designated times.

However, in rare situations—such as during school or work—if it is truly not possible to pray on time and there are no reasonable alternatives, it is permissible to combine prayers according to the Ḥanbalī, Shafii and some Mālikī opinions. This includes combining Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, or Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ.

That said, combining prayers should not become a regular habit. Whenever possible, one should pray each ṣalāh in its proper time, as this is in line with the Sharīʿah.

Wallāhu Aʿlam.
