My husband cursed the religion out of anger

Question:
My husband is a respectful man. He sometimes prays, but sometimes he stops. The issue is that when he gets angry, he says things like “May your religion be cursed.” Does saying this make him a disbeliever (kafir)? And if he has become a disbeliever, what should I do as his wife?

Answer :
Saying such words—like cursing the religion—is extremely serious and very dangerous. It can take a person out of Islam if he says it intentionally, fully understanding what he’s saying, and meaning it.

However, if he says it out of intense anger, without really meaning to insult the religion or knowing what he’s saying, then some scholars say he may not be judged as a disbeliever, though he still committed a major sin and must repent sincerely.

As a wife, here’s what you should do:

1. Talk to him gently and explain how serious these words are.

2. Encourage him to repent and ask Allah’s forgiveness.

3. If he truly meant those words and refuses to repent or believe in Islam anymore, then you cannot stay married to him. But this should only be judged by a qualified Islamic scholar or imam after discussing the full details.
