Wearing Football Jerseys with Religious Symbols: Is It Permissible?

Question
Is it permissible to wear football jerseys such as the AC Milan, Barcelona, and Manchester United kits?

I have seen differing opinions due to their logos, with some stating it is actual shirk to wear the top, while others say it is permissible because of the origin of the logo or the intention behind wearing it.

JazakAllahu khayran.

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Islam strictly prohibits shirk and forbids approving, venerating, or glorifying symbols of false religions.

Allah says:

“And whoever honors the symbols of Allah, indeed it is from the piety of the hearts.”
Surat al Hajj 22:32

Likewise, a Muslim is commanded to preserve his Islamic identity and avoid anything that resembles approval or glorification of the symbols of disbelief.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
Sunan Abu Dawud

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars distinguish between:

  • Committing shirk, which requires belief, worship, or approval of other than Allah.
  • Wearing or displaying symbols associated with another religion, which does not itself constitute shirk unless accompanied by belief or reverence.

However, they also explain that Muslims should avoid displaying religious symbols that are distinctive to other faiths, even if they do not believe in them, because doing so may:

  • Resemble approval.
  • Confuse others.
  • Normalize non-Islamic religious symbols.
  • Weaken the distinct identity of a Muslim.

For this reason, many scholars discouraged or prohibited wearing clothing that prominently displays crosses or other religious emblems, even if the wearer has no intention of venerating them.

3. Application to the Question

Regarding football jerseys:

  • Manchester United’s logo does not contain a religious symbol, so wearing it is permissible provided the jersey itself is free of other prohibited elements.
  • Barcelona and AC Milan have historically included a cross within their club crests as part of their historical or civic identity.

Although the wearer is not intending shirk, and wearing such a jersey does not constitute disbelief, a Muslim should avoid wearing clothing that prominently displays the cross or other symbols that are recognized as religious symbols.

Therefore:

  • It is incorrect to say that merely wearing such a jersey is shirk.
  • However, it is also not appropriate for a Muslim to wear clothing bearing a visible cross when alternatives are readily available.

Many clubs produce:

  • Training shirts
  • Warm-up tops
  • Jerseys with modified or covered logos

These should be preferred.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

سد الذرائع
Blocking the means to harm.

This principle applies because although wearing such a jersey is not itself shirk, displaying religious symbols may gradually normalize them, diminish the Muslim’s distinct identity, or lead to unnecessary resemblance to the symbols of other religions. The Sharia therefore blocks avenues that may lead to greater harm, even when the immediate act does not amount to disbelief.

Final Ruling

Wearing a football jersey that contains a cross or another distinctive religious symbol is not shirk, since shirk requires belief or worship directed to other than Allah. However, a Muslim should avoid wearing such clothing because it displays a symbol associated with another religion. This falls under the principle of blocking the means to harm (سد الذرائع) and preserving the distinct identity of the Muslim. Jerseys without such symbols, or where the symbol has been removed or covered, are preferable.

And Allah knows best.
