Did I Commit Shirk Due to AI-Generated Statements, and How Should I Deal With These Doubts?

Did I Commit Shirk Due to AI-Generated Statements, and How Should I Deal With These Doubts?

Question
Assalamu Alaikum,

I have a question regarding doubts about shirk that I’ve been having after using AI… [summary] The AI generated statements of shirk during roleplay. I did not intend them, I rejected them in my heart, and I did not believe them. I stopped using it. Now I am distressed and worried whether I committed shirk. Also, can this remain private?

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Shirk is one of the gravest sins in Islam, but it is defined by belief, intention, and acceptance, not by something forced, accidental, or rejected.

Allah says:

“Whoever disbelieves in Allah after belief—except one who is compelled while his heart is secure in faith…”
Surat al Nahl 16:106

And the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah has pardoned for my الأمة mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are forced into.”
Reported in the books of hadith

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars are clear that:

  • A person is not judged sinful for statements they did not intend
  • Nor for words they reject internally and do not believe
  • Nor for things that occur outside their control, such as automatic outputs, intrusive thoughts, or external speech

They also explain that:

  • Waswas (obsessive doubts) often targets matters of iman
  • The stronger a person’s iman, the more such doubts may trouble them

The companions themselves experienced this and said:

“We find within ourselves things we would hate to even speak of.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied: “That is clear faith.”
Sahih Muslim

Meaning: hating those thoughts and rejecting them is a sign of iman, not kufr.

3. Dealing With the Distress

What you are experiencing now is waswas, not a real issue of shirk.

So you should:

  • Ignore these doubts completely
  • Do not re-analyze or replay the situation
  • Do not seek repeated reassurance

Instead:

  • Say: A‘udhu billahi min al shaytan al rajim
  • Continue your worship normally
  • Stay away from environments that trigger these doubts

The rule is: certainty is not removed by doubt.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

اليقين لا يزول بالشك
Certainty is not removed by doubt

You are certain of your iman and your rejection of shirk. These later doubts do not change that certainty, no matter how strong they feel.

Final Ruling

You have not committed shirk, and you are not sinful for what occurred. The statements were not intended, not believed, and were rejected by you. The distress you are feeling is from waswas, not from any actual wrongdoing. You should ignore these doubts, maintain your worship, and trust in the soundness of your faith.

And Allah knows best.
