Urine Leakage During Pregnancy: Do You Need to Renew Wudu Every Time?
Question
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
During my pregnancy, I have been experiencing slight urine leakage when I sneeze or laugh, which I understand may be due to stress incontinence, and this did not occur before pregnancy.
My question is: when this happens, am I required to make istinja and renew my wudhu each time?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
1. The Shari Context
Purity is a condition for the validity of salah, and anything exiting from the private parts, including urine, normally breaks wudu.
At the same time, the Sharia takes into account cases of continuous or recurring difficulty, and provides ease in such situations.
Allah says:
“Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.”
Surat al Baqarah 2:185
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Make things easy and do not make them difficult.”
Sahih al Bukhari
2. Scholarly Discussion
The scholars discuss a category known as ma’dhur (excused person), which includes someone who experiences:
- Continuous or frequently recurring leakage
- Such that it is difficult to maintain wudu for a full prayer time
They explain:
- If the leakage is occasional and controllable, then each occurrence breaks wudu, and one must clean and renew wudu
- If the leakage is frequent or recurring in a way that is difficult to avoid, the person is treated as excused (ma’dhur)
For the excused person:
- They perform wudu once after the prayer time begins
- That wudu remains valid for the entire prayer time, even if leakage continues
- They do not need to renew wudu for each occurrence within that time
3. Application to the Question
In your situation, there are two possibilities:
1. If the leakage is occasional
For example, it only happens rarely when sneezing or laughing:
- You should perform istinja (cleaning)
- Renew your wudu before prayer
2. If the leakage is frequent and difficult to control
For example, it happens regularly throughout the day or within prayer times:
- You are considered an excused person (ma’dhur)
- You clean yourself, use protection if needed, and make wudu once after the prayer time enters
- You then pray, even if leakage occurs during that time
- You do not repeat wudu for each occurrence
Given that pregnancy-related leakage can be recurring, many women in your situation fall under the excused category, especially if it happens consistently.
4. Relevant Usul Principle
المشقة تجلب التيسير
Hardship brings about facilitation
This principle means that when a person faces ongoing difficulty, the Sharia provides a practical concession. In this case, repeatedly renewing wudu for every small leakage would cause hardship, so the ruling is eased.
يتجاوز عن الاصل في الطهارة لاصحاب الاعذار
The rulings related to those with valid excuses
This principle refers to individuals who have ongoing conditions, such as continuous or recurring nullifiers of wudu, that are difficult to control. The Sharia assigns them special rulings to ensure that worship remains manageable. In your case, recurring leakage during pregnancy places you under the category of ashab al a‘dhar, meaning you follow the concession of making one wudu per prayer time without repeating it for every occurrence.
Final Ruling
If the urine leakage is occasional, you should clean yourself and renew wudu each time before prayer. If it is frequent and difficult to control, you are considered excused, and you may make one wudu per prayer time, and pray without repeating it for each occurrence.
And Allah knows best.
