Do Missed Ramadan Fasts Need to Be Made Up Before Hajj?

Do Missed Ramadan Fasts Need to Be Made Up Before Hajj?

Question
Do I have to make up the missed days of Ramadan before going to Hajj, or can I do them after?

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Making up missed fasts of Ramadan (qada) is an obligation that remains due upon a person until it is fulfilled. However, the Sharia allows flexibility in when those missed fasts are made up.

Allah says:

“And whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days.”
Surat al Baqarah 2:185

Hajj is an independent obligation with its own time and conditions, and it is not dependent on completing missed fasts beforehand.

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars agree that missed Ramadan fasts must be made up, but they do not require that they be completed immediately, nor do they make them a condition for the validity of Hajj.

They clarify that:

  • Qada of fasting is obligatory but flexible in timing
  • It must be completed before the next Ramadan without excuse
  • Hajj is a separate obligation and remains valid regardless of outstanding fasts

There is no requirement in the four madhahib that a person must complete their missed fasts before performing Hajj.

3. Application to the Question

If you have missed days of Ramadan and are planning to go for Hajj:

  • Your Hajj is valid even if you have not yet made up those fasts
  • You may perform Hajj first, then complete your missed fasts afterward

However:

  • If you are able to make up the fasts before Hajj, that is better and more cautious
  • You should ensure that the fasts are completed before the next Ramadan

If a person delays making them up without a valid excuse until after the next Ramadan, they would be sinful for the delay, even though the fasts still must be made up.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

الواجب الموسع يجوز فعله في أي وقت من وقته
An obligation with a flexible time may be performed at any point within its time

This principle means that when the Sharia gives an obligation a broad time window, the person may fulfill it at any point within that period. Making up missed Ramadan fasts falls into this category, as it may be done any time before the next Ramadan.

Final Ruling

You do not have to make up missed Ramadan fasts before going to Hajj. You may perform Hajj and then make them up afterward. However, it is better to complete them earlier when possible, and they must be made up before the next Ramadan.

And Allah knows best.
