Is Nutmeg Permissible in Small Amounts for Flavoring?

Is Nutmeg Permissible in Small Amounts for Flavoring?

Question
I know nutmeg is haram if it causes intoxication but what about in small amounts for flavor.

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Islam prohibits intoxicants, meaning anything that affects the mind and causes intoxication.

The Prophet said:

“Every intoxicant is khamr, and every khamr is forbidden.”
Sahih Muslim

He also said:

“Whatever intoxicates in large amounts, a small amount of it is also forbidden.”
Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami at Tirmidhi

Nutmeg is discussed by scholars because consuming it in large quantities can have intoxicating or mind-altering effects.

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars differed regarding substances like nutmeg.

Some scholars classified nutmeg as an intoxicant, and therefore applied the hadith that prohibits even small amounts of anything that intoxicates in large quantities.

Other scholars distinguished between substances that are commonly used as intoxicants and those that only produce harmful or intoxicating effects when consumed in unusual, excessive amounts.

Based on this, many scholars such as Al Ramli, and Al Hattab, Al Azeem Abadi in his commentary and others permitted the use of nutmeg in very small quantities for flavoring, since it is not consumed for intoxication and does not produce intoxication in those amounts.

3. Application to the Question

Using nutmeg in small amounts as a spice in cooking or baking falls under normal customary use and does not lead to intoxication.

In this case:

  • It is not being used as an intoxicant
  • The quantity is very small
  • It does not affect the mind

Therefore, many scholars allow its use in food for flavoring purposes.

However, consuming nutmeg in large amounts with the intention of experiencing its intoxicating effects would be prohibited.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

العادة محكمة
Custom is authoritative

This principle means that common, recognized usage is taken into account in rulings. Nutmeg is widely used as a culinary spice in very small amounts, not as an intoxicant. Therefore, its ruling follows its customary use, which is permissible, as long as it does not lead to intoxication.

Final Ruling

Nutmeg is not permissible if used in amounts that cause intoxication. However, using it in small amounts for flavoring in food is permissible according to many scholars, as it does not intoxicate in that form or usage.

And Allah knows best.
