If Eid Falls on Friday, Is Jumuah Still Obligatory? A Madhhab Breakdown

Question
Assalamu Alaikom wa rahmatallahi wabarakatuhu Sheiqh, I hope you are doing well inshaAllah! This year there is a chance that eid may fall on Friday, i was wondering what the opinion of each of the 4 madhaabs is regarding the Jummah salat on the same day as Eid Salat? Jazakallahu khair

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Jumuah prayer is a weekly obligation upon adult Muslim men, while Eid prayer is a highly emphasized communal act. Occasionally, both may coincide on the same day.

There are narrations indicating that when Eid and Jumuah fall on the same day, a concession may be given. The Prophet said:

“Two Eids have occurred on this day of yours. Whoever wishes, it will suffice him from Jumuah, but we will be performing Jumuah.”
Sunan Abu Dawud

At the same time, the general command of Jumuah remains:

“O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah.”
Surat al Jumuah 62:9

The juristic discussion therefore revolves around how to reconcile the general obligation of Jumuah with the concession mentioned in the hadith.

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars of the four madhahib differed on how to apply this concession.

The Hanafi & Maliki madhhab holds that Jumuah remains obligatory even if Eid is prayed earlier that day. There is no general concession to leave Jumuah.

The Shafii madhhab holds that Jumuah remains obligatory for residents of the city. However, they allow a concession for those who live outside the city or at a distance, such that attending Jumuah would involve hardship. Those individuals may suffice with praying Dhuhr instead.

The Hanbali madhhab allows a broader concession. According to them, those who attend Eid prayer may be excused from Jumuah, but they must still pray Dhuhr in its place. However, it remains recommended to attend Jumuah, and the imam should still establish it for those who wish to attend.

3. Relevant Usul Principle

ولا ينكر المختلف فيه
Matters of valid scholarly disagreement are not to be condemned

This principle applies here because the issue is one of recognized اختلاف among the four madhahib, each based on valid evidence and interpretation. Therefore, a person may follow a معتبر opinion, and others should not be criticized for following a different valid position in this matter.

Final Ruling

If Eid falls on a Friday, then according to the Hanafi and Maliki schools, Jumuah remains obligatory. According to the Shafii school, it remains obligatory for residents with limited concession for those at a distance. According to the Hanbali school, those who attended Eid may be excused from Jumuah but must still pray Dhuhr. All of these are valid positions, and a Muslim may follow a recognized opinion in this matter.

And Allah knows best.
