Is It Permissible to Make a Collective Dua After Completing a Quran or Tafsir Study Circle?

Question
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. I would like to ask a question regarding our sisters’ study circle. After completing a Qur’an or Tafsir class, is it permissible for the participants to make a collective du‘a together?

Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.

1. The Shari Context

Making dua is among the most emphasized acts of worship in Islam. The Quran and Sunnah encourage believers to frequently turn to Allah in supplication, asking Him for guidance, forgiveness, and blessing.

Allah says:

“Your Lord says: Call upon Me and I will respond to you.”
Surat Ghafir 40:60

The Prophet also said:

“Dua is worship.”
Jami at Tirmidhi

Supplication is therefore encouraged in many circumstances, including after gatherings of knowledge and remembrance. The Prophet and his companions would gather for remembrance of Allah and seek forgiveness at the end of their gatherings.

The Prophet said:

“No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah except that the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those with Him.”
Sahih Muslim

2. Scholarly Discussion

The scholars generally agree that making dua after gatherings of knowledge or remembrance is permissible and recommended in principle, since gatherings of Quran and learning are among the gatherings of dhikr.

The discussion arises regarding the form of the supplication. Some scholars allow collective supplication where one person makes dua and others say amin. They note that the companions sometimes participated in supplications led by the Prophet, and that saying amin to a supplication is well established.

many scholars take a balanced approach. They allow collective dua occasionally, especially when it arises naturally, but discourage turning it into a strict routine that people feel obligated to perform after every class.

3. Application to the Question

In the case of a sisters’ study circle that completes a Quran or Tafsir lesson, it is permissible for the participants to make dua together. For example, one person may make supplication while the others listen and say amin.

Moreover, if it is done sometimes, especially for seeking blessing in knowledge, asking Allah for understanding, or praying for the participants, it falls within the general encouragement of dua and remembrance.

4. Relevant Usul Principle

العبادات مبناها على التوقيف
Acts of worship are based on revealed evidence

This principle means that specific forms of worship that are tied to a particular time, place, or method require evidence from revelation. While dua itself is encouraged and broadly permitted, turning a particular format of worship into a fixed and regular ritual requires clear textual basis.

Final Ruling

Making a collective dua after completing a Quran or Tafsir study circle is permissible. One person may make supplication, and the others may say amin. However, it should not be treated as obligatory practice. It may be done occasionally as a general supplication seeking blessing and benefit from the knowledge shared.

And Allah knows best.
