How Should Zakat al Mal Be Calculated When Wealth Fluctuates and the Hawl Is Difficult to Track?
Question
As-salamu alaykum Shaykh,
I find it difficult to track which specific funds in my account have completed a full lunar year, since money comes in and out regularly. I have heard that some scholars recommend choosing a fixed Islamic date, such as the first day of Ramadan, and paying zakat each year on whatever wealth one possesses on that date.
If I receive money shortly before that date, and I know for certain it has not completed a full lunar year, is zakat still due on it under this method, or should it be excluded until it completes a hawl?
Also, I only recently graduated and began earning income in September 2025. I had never reached nisab before, but I am currently above nisab. Do I need to pay zakat this upcoming Ramadan, or should I wait until one lunar year has passed from the date I first reached nisab and then make that my fixed zakat date?
JazakAllahu khayran.
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
This question concerns the condition of hawl, the practical method of zakat calculation, and how Sharia addresses modern financial reality with fluctuating income.
1. The Shar‘i Context
Zakat al mal becomes obligatory when two conditions are met:
- Reaching the nisab
- The passing of one lunar year (hawl) over that wealth
The Prophet said:
“There is no zakat on wealth until a year has passed over it.”
This establishes hawl as a condition in principle. However, the jurists also addressed cases where exact tracking becomes impractical, especially with cash that mixes and fluctuates.
2. Using a Fixed Zakat Date
Many scholars permitted, and some recommended, choosing a fixed Islamic date each year to calculate zakat on all zakatable assets held on that date.
This method is based on:
- Ease
- Accuracy in fulfilling the obligation
- Avoiding negligence or underpayment
Under this method, all zakatable wealth present on that date is included, even if some of it entered the account shortly before.
This is because cash is treated as one combined category. When new money joins existing nisab, it follows the hawl of the principal, according to the majority of scholars.
So if:
- You already had nisab
- And additional money came in before your zakat date
Then zakat is due on the total amount, even if some of it did not independently complete a year.
3. If the Person Has Not Yet Completed a Hawl
This distinction is critical.
If a person:
- Had never reached nisab before, and
- Only recently reached nisab
Then zakat is not due immediately.
In this case:
- The hawl begins from the date you first reached nisab
- Zakat becomes obligatory one lunar year from that date
- That date then becomes your zakat reference point going forward
So for your situation:
- Since you first reached nisab after starting work in September 2025
- And one lunar year has not yet passed
You do not pay zakat this upcoming Ramadan unless a full lunar year has passed since reaching nisab.
4. Why Newly Acquired Wealth Is Included After Hawl Begins
Once a person has completed a hawl on nisab:
- Any additional wealth added during the year is treated as growth
- It does not require its own independent hawl
This approach is:
- Adopted by the majority of scholars
- Practically necessary
- More protective of the poor
Tracking every dollar independently is not required by Sharia.
5. Relevant Usul Principles
الميسور لا يسقط بالمعسور
The attainable obligation is not waived due to difficulty in attaining the rest.
Exact tracking is difficult, but fulfilling zakat reasonably remains obligatory.
Once hawl and nisab are established, doubts about individual dollars do not negate zakat.
Including all available wealth prevents underpayment and fulfills the purpose of zakat.
Final Ruling
If you have already completed a full lunar year while possessing at least nisab, then you may choose a fixed Islamic date each year and pay zakat on all zakatable wealth you own on that date, even if some of it was received shortly before.
However, if you only recently reached nisab and have not yet completed one lunar year, then zakat is not due yet. You should calculate one lunar year from the date you first reached nisab, and that date becomes your zakat date going forward.
This approach is sound, practical, and fully grounded in classical fiqh.
And Allah knows best.
